Libya: Consultancy and Trainings, Youth Political Academy

Consultancy for NDI in Libya: Working for democracy and making democracy work!
The Washington D.C. based American-Canadian National Democratic Institute asked me to join one of their programs in Libya. My consultancy is part of NDI’s ongoing programs registered with the Ministry of Culture & Civil Society, supporting Libya’s democratic transition process. This consultancy began in January 2013. As part of this consultancy I work with parties in workshops and one-on-one meetings to strengthen youth participation.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM:

In January, 2013 the National Democratic Institute established a Political Academy in order to engage the next generation of Libya’s political leaders. The Youth Political Academy / Womens Political Academy aims to cultivate an informed and skilled group of Libyan youth who are actively and democratically engaged in political parties or political groups, and demonstrate willingness to build democratic political organizations. This training school would build the capacities of political activists between 18 and 40 years old in leadership, communication, and political management. Through a rigorous recruitment process, for ensuring a diverse political and geographical representation, 25 female and 25 male participants will be selected to join the school. In 2013, participants will meet for intensive workshops. Benefiting from training and ongoing one-on-one assistance, participants will be expected to design and implement projects on political party development. The program will build on similar NDI initiatives from around the world, and will use NDI Arabic-language publications.

As a lead trainer I conduct and oversee the three training modules, and give and evaluate homework assignments to trainees, in close coordination with the program team. Between modules, I provide feedback on homework, as part of the ongoing assistance to participants.

I took this photo one late afternoon in January in the old town of Tripoli, Libya. This painting on a wall became somehow an illustration for the uprise of the Libyan people two years ago. It shows Ayman Toumi – he is the first martyr in Tripoli, killed on Feb. 20th. A friend, Anis, told me that he was one of his friends and it was a wonderful young man so some fellows painted pictures on some of the walls in Tripoli and Libya. The man riding the horse is Omar Mukhtar, who fought the Italian occupants. Italian armed forces captured and hanged him in 1931.

ABOUT NDI:

NDI is a nonprofit, nonpartisan, nongovernmental organization that has supported democratic institutions and practices in every region of the world for more than two decades. Since its founding in 1983, NDI and its local partners have worked to establish and strengthen political and civic organizations, safeguard elections, and promote citizen participation, openness and accountability in government. NDI’s programs in Libya aim to strengthen the ability of the country’s nascent political parties and civil society organizations to participate in the transition process.
